Technical vs. Tactical

Those that have followed my writing over the last 30 years will know I try to focus on proportional training. This means training your athlete with a balanced approach to attempt to match their game requirements. Take out the figurative magnifying glass and examine your goalie coaching style. My fear and belief is too large a percentage of current training is fixated on technical areas and some that are not realistic to the goalie’s real world. This would be similar to a golfer exclusively working on their swing and grip. They would have a pretty swing but would likely be easily beaten on the course.

I think many goalie coaches over prioritize technical training because it can be done in small areas and done with out high end appropriate shooters. At the end of the day if the majority of your lessons are not tactical, realistic game situation stuff then you are not developing future pros but future part time goalie coaches and instgramjockeys.
